Why Coworking Still Makes Sense for How We Work

Working from anywhere sounded wonderful. Then anywhere became the same corner of the dining table, every day, with a charger permanently stretched across the floor.

For some people, home works brilliantly. Others miss the separation, the people or simply having somewhere to arrive in the morning.

That's why I think coworking has a useful place in how we work. It gives you a professional environment without requiring you to take on a whole office yourself. No grand prediction about the end of traditional offices needed.

A place to work can give the week some shape

There is something practical about leaving home, sitting down somewhere set up for work and leaving again when you're done. It can make the boundary easier to keep.

Coworking also gives you other people around you. Sometimes that's a conversation. Sometimes it's just the pleasant discovery that you aren't the only person working through a stubborn problem on a Wednesday.

It won't automatically make you more productive. The environment still has to suit the work.

Shared resources can take jobs off your list

Internet, coffee, maintained common areas and on-site support are useful because somebody else is organising them. You're choosing how much of that daily administration you want to handle yourself.

Compare the included services and actual access hours. The word flexible doesn't mean every membership gives you the keys at midnight.

Community is a possibility, not a sales forecast

Being around other business owners can lead to useful conversations. It can also just make the day feel less isolated. Both have value.

But a membership isn't a guaranteed referral pipeline. You'll still need to do the work of meeting people, following up and running a business people want to recommend.

Visit and see whether you feel comfortable with the environment. You don't have to become everyone's new best friend to belong there.

Some work needs a different setting

A shared room may be a poor fit if your day is full of confidential conversations, loud calls or work that needs very little interruption. Booking a meeting room can help with occasional needs, subject to availability and cost.

If that need is constant, compare a private office instead. Don't spend your whole membership trying to turn an open workspace into a private room.

And if home already gives you everything you need, that's a perfectly reasonable choice too.

Choose the useful version of flexible
